Aboriginal Music Week 2009 (AMW09) is a series of concerts and music business workshops in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Five evening and three lunch hour concerts in downtown venues are on the agenda along with three afternoon workshops at the Manitoba Music Resource Centre. The concerts feature music of all genres by Aboriginal and Native American artists from across the continent.

The festival lineup will be announced Friday, October 2 along with all the venue and ticket purchasing details.

The festival is produced by the Manitoba Aboriginal Music Host Committee Incorporated (MAMHC) and supported by the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, Eagle Vision Productions, the Province of Manitoba, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings, and the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The MAMHC is governed by an eight-person Board of Directors, which includes Alan Greyeyes, Lisa Meeches, Waubgeshig Rice, Jacques St. Goddard, Jamie Isaac, David Robertson, Teressa Clifton, and Kim Ziervogel.

The MAMHC has completed a number of other music projects in the past couple of years, including “Take the Fort!,” a western Canada tour of Manitoba Métis music and dance for the 2009 Cultural Olympiad and the Aboriginal Nominee Honouring Ceremony at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards in Brandon, Manitoba.

AMW09 runs concurrently to the Manito Ahbee Festival and the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards but is a separate event.

About the Aboriginal Music Week Logo

A combination of two extremely familiar symbols – The Music Note and The Eagle – have been used to create this logo. The universal recognition of a music note breaks through language and literacy barriers. Combining that with the strong traditional symbology of the eagle – a symbol of power, the logo is intended to draw an instant relationship to the power of music.
